The third Sunday in Advent: December 14

The Annual Bake Sale

between services

When people talk about Christ’s Church, they tend to focus on our music program. Or they mention our active community outreach group. Sometimes, you’ll hear about our artist community. The people who go unmentioned but not in the least unappreciated? Our cooks, bakers, and chefs. We have some of the best in the area, and the entire community looks forward to this annual Christmas bake sale. The fruits of their talented labor will be on tasty and aromatic display on December 14, starting after our 8:00 worship service. So, come, taste and see. Really. You’ll leave with a few additions for your own Christmas dinner, and a hostess gift or two for other holiday celebrations. They – and you – will be delighted.

The Christmas Bazaar

between services

Did you miss our art auction in September at Art on the Edge? You have another chance to sample the talents of our very active artistic community between worship services on December 14 in The Gathering Place. You’ll find all sorts of skilled craft work on display. Pick up a few last minute gifts. Reward yourself with something beautiful. Or just enjoy the sights.

The Greening of the Church

after the 10:30 service

After the 10:30 service, we will have the greening of the church, our festive annual celebration where we decorate the church with an abundance of evergreen boughs to celebrate the season. There’s usually soup and sandwiches on hand. This is such a joyful occasion, and a terrific opportunity to meet new people and make new friends. Everyone is welcome. It is a wonderful family tradition to start this year.

Our service of Lessons and Carols

7:00 p.m. in The Sanctuary

placeholder In 1918 Christmas returned to a world drained of energy and hope, shuddering from the agonies of death and destruction on a scale unimagined until that time. Worse yet, the people who had fought the Great War felt little or no sustaining spirit, no optimism – only the gratitude of being among “the lucky ones” who survived to face a bleak world.

That was the Christmas when the dons, the choristers and the choirmaster of Kings College at Cambridge University hit upon the idea of a service of “Lessons and Carols.” Representatives of the spectrum of the British population – from childhood to old age – were asked to read the lessons and choose the music that would help lift the spirits of dispirited Christianity.

Today, under the shadow of unspeakable barbarism being perpetrated in the Middle East, our world is seeing new evidence of what it means to be dispirited. Just as, during the past ninety-six years, the Christian world has embraced the wondrous idea that was born in Cambridge in 1918, we look forward to returning again this Christmas to the inspiration and comfort of our own Service of Lessons and Carols.
